That was such a batshit insane time for aircraft development. So many ideas and basically an unlimited budget. How exciting it must have been to be an engineer in those days.

Man I wish that project didn't crash and burn.

I don't approve of the theme today, but I love this post. I think we need a space for just straight up plane porn.

There is a space forum (or whatever you want to call Oppo). Why not one for aviation?

The tragic crash of XB-70 number two.
According to Air Force accounts, the Starfighter became involved in the wing vortex of the XB-70, with the pilot of the Starfighter being unable to correct. This resulting in the Starfighter doing a barrel roll over the top of the XB-70 and taking off the vertical stabilizers. The results were pretty inevitable. Looking at this sequence, it does seem amazing that the XB-70 flew in what looks like a normal attitude for so long, but that might simply be momentum or a trick of the video what with the Starfighter's rapid deceleration.

When my mother started her career with Rockwell (the North American), the XB-70 was her first project. My dad insured all the test pilots at Dryden (and was the reason the Society for Experimental Test Pilots was formed). He went to the crash site right after it happened. Fucking tragic ... it should NOT have happened. It was 100% chase plane pilot Joe Walker's fault and lead test pilot Carl Cross was stupid for trying to save the bird when it clearly could not be saved. Both paid the ultimate price for their mistakes, sadly.

Huh?
Not directed at you, necessarily.
Just an FYI for anyone who happens to read this thread.

My all time favorite plane. The crash site is out west of Barstow, CA. I'm down there from time to time and might try to get out to it some day. Apparently, there's still bits and pieces all over the ground.
